It is said in Japan that the paper should be made from the heart. The Japanese paper, Japanese people put a lot of considration into the process of making the Washi. The art of making paper has been around in Japan for over 1400 years.
Hikite is the piece of the Fusuma to open and close the door. Over the many years, many shapes, colors and materials were designed for the Hikite. However it is still used primarily for its functional purpose.
To bring out the best of the beautiful designs on the Fusuma paper (sometimes thought of as an art for of its own) the Fusuka door is finished with an outer frame. This frame is usually laquared with Japanese real laquar. This outer layer serves the same purpose of a picture frame to a beautiful art piece. The Fuchi has not only a practical part but also the beauty.
